Because the Fall “Movie Night” was such a success, the WTNA has decided to do it again. Save the date for the next West Towson Movie Night to be held April 28, 2012 at the West Towson Park. The rain date, if needed, will be the following weekend. I am guessing we will continue the Star Wars saga, but if you have an idea for a movie you would love to see, please email info@westtowson.org. More details coming soon…

Dierks Bentley at the Recher and other weekend events

THURSDAY, FEB. 2, 2012 – As luck would have it, one of the biggest stars in country music will be in Towson this weekend for a FREE concert at the Recher Theater, and I will be in Nashville, Tennessee. Dierks Bentley, famous for hits such as “What Was I Thinkin” and “Sideways” will be performing an acoustic show courtesy of WPOC and Capitol Records Nashville. Even if you don’t know his music (or you aren’t “in” to country), I highly recommend this show because he is a first-class musician (and besides that, ladies, he’s pretty easy on the eyes and has a voice that could melt butter). And, you can catch the show before the big game so there are no excuses to miss this one.

FROM THE TOWSON SWIM CLUB, JAN. 26, 2011–

Dear TSC Members,

Thanks to those of you who came to our meeting this past Tuesday. As you heard, we need you to help us recruit 135 new members by February 29 – with 135 new members, we can start digging.

For those who did not make it, and as a recap for those who did, we’d like to share with you the highlights of the meeting. The Powerpoint presentation we used is posted online at www.TowsonSwimClub.com, in the News & Updates column.

TSC founding member Josh Glikin was our host, and briefly spoke about the purpose of the meeting. Josh was followed by Mike Ertel who reminded us why we want a pool in our community—for the summertime social gathering spot, to improve our community and increase our home values and as an investment. Mike also took us through a brief timeline of the work to date. Highlights of that include:

• Project started in early 2008
• Lease secured in mid-2009
• Membership drive in 2009—we currently have about 180 members
• Financing commitment obtained from a private investor in spring 2010 but this subsequently fell through in November 2010
• Back to the drawing board in December 2010
• After a year of negotiation, two financing offers were obtained in December 2011

Jim Hutson spoke about the financing options. The total cost of the pool is around $1.4 million. Both financing offers—one for a $484,000 loan and one for a $400,000 loan—have requirements we must meet to release funding. One requires 315 paid memberships and the other 300, and both require an additional $150,000 in capital and a reserve. (see the powerpoint for the details)

Our biggest hurdle right now is membership. For a 2013 opening we must begin storm water management engineering work within 60 days. This will cost about $30,000. But it doesn’t make sense to move ahead if we do not have the membership in place. So our goal, between now and February 29th, is to sign up the 135 members we need to make this pool happen. The board cannot do this alone—we need the commitment, energy and work of the entire membership to make it happen. If we do not get to 315 members by February 29th, the board will terminate the lease with the county and return all members money held in escrow. Not one penny of the members’ money has been spent. The board has raised and spent about $68,000 to date on legal and engineering work. We believe we have options within the community to raise the additional capital. So it all comes down to members—we need them now.

So now it is up to you—the membership—to get out and get new members. Go talk to your friends and neighbors and let them know that time is running out. It’s now or never. We need the new members to fill out an application form (linked to the document on the TSC website) and send it in with a check for $250 (or pay online at www.TowsonSwimClub.com). We will work out payment plans for the remaining funds over the next few weeks.

The board will support your efforts in any way possible. We will attend open houses if you organize them, talk to your friends and neighbors, provide you with print materials and incentives. We will be sharing these with you over the next few days. We will track our progress —follow us on Facebook and check the website for updates. Let us know what we can do to help you.

Sign petition to fund air conditioning in BCPS schools

Getting through middle school is tough enough as it is, but having to SWEAT through it makes it, like, totally suck even more – and that is the case at Dumbarton Middle School. I vividly remember seeing the sweaty, pimply faces (because heat and humidity can create bacteria – and THAT causes acne…eeewwww!) of the students as I cruised through the halls (incognito, of course, because no kid wants their friends to know that parent volunteer is his/her mom). Now you can help prevent future stops at the “Proactive” cart at Towson Town Center by signing a petition to install air conditioning in all Baltimore County Schools. Towson Swim Club to hold members meeting 1/24/12

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 18, 2012 – If you are founding member of the Towson Swim Club, you are invited to a members meeting on January 24, 7:30 p.m. at the Sheppard Pratt Conference Center. Meeting details, received via “E-vite”, say the group plans to talk about membership, pool design details, bank financing requirements and other financial details. The invitation says…

“At the end of the meeting we hope to have a clear consensus on how to proceed. Your voice and your feedback are important. We know it has been a long haul and we thank you for hanging in with us. We hope to see you on Tuesday!”
